Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this morning spoke to outgoing Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta, praising him for the way he had acted after a mutiny within his party.

In a tweet, Dr Muscat described Sig Letta as a friend and said the dignified way how he had stepped down should serve as an example for all.

Dr Muscat and Sig Letta had worked closely together, particularly on the migration issue.

Thirty-nine-year-old Matteo Renzi is expected to become the Italy's youngest-ever prime minister, even though he was never elected to the Italian parliament.
