Siggiewi local council is to take court action after the government’s Property Division renewed an encroachment agreement to enable the locality’s Labour Party club to continue to use part of the council’s civic centre.

Mayor Karol Aquilina said the encroachment agreement had been for a five year term to give time for the Pl to find a new site for its club. However the Property Division had secretly renewed the agreement, despite the council’s plans to use the area to provide new services included a night centre for the elderly, educational courses and a public library.

Dr Aquilina pointed out that the extension of the civic centre was promised before the council’s election and was voted for by a majority of the people of Siggiewi.

PM REACTION

In a reaction, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said the present government had simply extended an encroachment contract agreed by the previous government.

He said the way the former government had evicted the PL club from much of the property was a vindictive act. See video above.
