The peace process in the Middle East was discussed between Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas during a meeting in New York.

Dr Muscat said that Malta supported the Palestinian people’s cause with conviction and said that, in the coming weeks, he would be having official talks both in Israel and in the Palestinian state.

Mr Abbas described Malta as an old friend and said Palestine was grateful for Malta’s work in the United Nations. He confirmed the declaration made by US Secretary of State John Kerry some days ago that Israel and Palestine had accepted to intensify peace talks with the aim of reaching a final agreement.

He said that an agreement between the two countries should not just lead to a more peaceful situation but also to positive economic development in the region.

Dr Muscat said Malta looked forward to exploring the possibility of attracting more investment from the Middle East to Malta.
