Labour leader Joseph Muscat complained this morning that all glass waste collected in Malta and Gozo was being dumped at Wied Fulija, against all waste recycling principles.

This case, he said was not setting a good example for those who used bring-in sites to separate their waste. It was shameful that while efforts were being made to encourage children to separate waste, the state was setting a bad example.

In a reaction, Wastserv, the government's waste management agency, said the glass was being kept at Wied Fulija until there was sufficient volume for it to be exported for recycling. It denied that the glass was being mixed with other waste.

The Nationalist Party accused Dr Muscat of being superficial and said his comments had only been intended to create doubts on schemes which were creating jobs and safeguarding the environment.
