Labour leader Joseph Muscat has urged the government to guarantee energy prices so that businesses can have peace of mind in their planning processes.

Speaking on One TV, Dr Muscat said that in trumpeting the energy tariff adjustments, the Prime Minister had not guaranteed that bills would not rise again.

It was easy to trim the tariffs before an election, but businesses and households wanted peace of mind, Dr Muscat said.

He said the statement isued late yesterday confirmed that there had not even been a 1c cut on the bills issued between October and the end of March.

He observed that the last time oil prices were at current levels, the surcharge on electricity bills was 50%. Yet now consumers were being charged the equivalent of a 100% surcharge.

Dr Muscat also pointed out that the government had not denied that the price of bottled gas was to rise.
