Opposition leader Joseph Muscat called for better relations between the management of Malta Freeport and the trade unions when he visited the port this morning.
Dr Muscat and senior PL officials were shown around by the Managing Director, Uwe Malezki.
Dr Muscat said the PL was pleased to note that the freeport's productivity was keeping up with competing harbours. He welcomed the foreign investment being made in the facility and the confidence which was thus being shown in the country.
The Labour leader urged the management to also consider the needs of the neighbouring residents, especially as Malta was the only country in the EU which did not have proper regulations on noise pollution.
The PL in a statement said that Malta Freeport was a Labour government initiative which went back to 1985. The freeport is currently run by CMA CGM.
The freeport was recently at the heart of a union recognition issue involving the Malta Dockers' Union and the GWU. The dispute escalated into a court battle between the freeport and the GWU.
