David Norbert Schembri, serving life for viciously stabbing his former girlfriend to death, will appear in court in the coming days to be charged with slashing another inmate in the face with a makeshift 'knife'.

Mr Schembri and fellow prisoner Noel Borg had had an argument in late May in Division 1. The two clashed and had to be separated. Subsequently, Mr Borg was placed in Division 3 at his own request.

Mr Borg was attacked at the infirmary on June 1 and was slashed across the face with a weapon fashioned out of a shaver. Prison sources described the makeshift knife as two blades attached lengthwise along a shaver handle.

The injured inmate was rushed to hospital and was operated upon. He suffered a damaged eyeball and it is still unclear to what extent his sight will be affected.

After the incident, Mr Schembri was transferred to maximum security Division 6, where he now remains.

Last January 22, Mr Schembri was condemned to life imprisonment for killing 32-year-old Josette Scicluna, stabbing her 49 times in front of the couple's then seven-year-old daughter.

He shot open the door of her flat in May 2004 and chased her into the kitchen where he cornered her between the refrigerator and the wall and stabbed her relentlessly.

It resulted at the trial by jury that stab wounds had been found all over the woman's body. She died of a haemorrhage while being rushed to hospital in an ambulance.

The daughter had been removed from the apartment during the attack by a neighbour who heard the mayhem next door.

After Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono pronounced judgment and Mr Schembri headed for the door escorted by the police, he turned to the victim's sister and other relatives and said: "I'm still alive, I'm still alive", shrugging his shoulders.

Mr Schembri's criminal record has no fewer than 12 convictions. Three of them consisted of jail terms, which followed a series of conditional discharges, probation orders and fines. He has convictions for driving offences, possession of cannabis, heroin and cocaine and trafficking in drugs as well as running over a person.
