The murder trial of a Syrian man which should have begun yesterday has been deferred to November after a legal aid lawyer said he was no longer representing him and that witnesses had to come from abroad.

Ebrahem Alhamow, 29, is pleading not guilty to the murder of Ismail Ebdou in July 2007.

The victim was found dead in his white Ford Van at the bottom of a hill in Selmun. The accused allegedly hit him on the head with a mallet and pushed the van off a cliff with him inside. Yesterday morning, legal aid lawyer Joe Mifsud told the court that he was no longer representing the accused and that witnesses still had to come from abroad.

The trial will start on November 1.
