The MUMN has urged the Minister of Health to intervene with the Ministry of Finance and the Health Department to ensure that vacancies for Nursing Officers in 60 wards are filled.

The union said Nursing Officers played a crucial role in the seamless treatment of patients.

The process for the recruitment of these Nursing Officers started 10 months ago and the Selection Board submitted its report to the Public Service Commission months ago, but the process could not be completed because the commission was still awaiting information from the Health Department, the MUMN said.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Health was trying to economise and only wanted to allocate funds for the recruitment of 15 Nursing Officers.

The union called on the Minister of Health to ensure that the required number of Nursing Officers are recruited as soon as possible.

MINISTRY REACTION

The Health Ministry said it had been instrumental in the engagement of 15 Nursing Officers and their number would be raised to 53. Just yesterday, it forwarded the names to the Public Service Commission. The MUMN was also kept informed. Today's statement, therefore, was ambiguous, the ministry said.
