The nurses union is awaiting more details on the health plans announced by the government last week.

The new president of the MUMN, Maria Cutajar, said this morning that the union is always in favour of more investment in the sector but is awaiting more details from the government.

She said that although the government informed the union about its plans no details were given.

She said that the biggest challenge these new projects would face was the number of nurses needed.

The union estimated that Malta's output of new nurses would have to rise to 300, from the current 150.

Ma Cutajar denied that her council worked against former president Paul Pace to oust him. She said that these assertions are completely unfounded.

The government announced last week that a new hospital will be built in Gozo by Bart's offering facilities for the locals and for medical tourism.

In a separate project, St Luke's Hospital will be revamped, providing a number of services ancillary to Mater Dei, as well as a wing of 250 beds for medical tourism.

The Sunday Times of Malta also revealed yesterday that a new private hospital will open in SmartCity.
