The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses has declared an industrial dispute at Boffa Hospital, saying false economy is detrimental to nurses and patients.

The union complained that unlike at Mater Dei Hospital, nurses are not provided with a proper hand liquid soap and other cleaning detergents, despite the presence of the MRSA bug.

"Nurses are working with no proper hand liquid soap and therefore suffering from skin allergies and skin condition. Cheap unbranded cleaning products including hand hygiene products are bring purchased specifically to Boffa Hospital since Boffa management refuse to purchase products from the main general stores which supply Mater Dei Hospital," the MUMN said.

It added that apron holders and proper liquid soap dispensers have not been purchased for patients.

"The Health Division is more concerned about the financial budget than the welfare of the nurses and the patients. This shows the cost saving exercise being used by management from FMS personnel working in Boffa Hospital is   to the detriment of the patients and the nurses in Boffa Hospital," the union added.
