A re-enactment of the presentation of the George Cross to Malta is to be held by the Malta Tourism Authority on April 15, the 66th anniversary of the granting of the medal to Malta.

The GC, the highest civilian award, was awarded to Malta on April 15, 1942 by King George VI. The citation read: "To honour her brave people I award the George Cross to the Island Fortress of Malta to bear witness to a heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history."

The presentation actually took place in September 1942.

The re-enactment will take place on the Palace Square, the same place where the presentation was made by the Governor, Viscount Gort to Sir George Borg, the Chief Justice.

An MTA spokesman said the square will be taken back in time, with sandbags along one side, and soldiers standing in for the KOMR, who had mounted a guard around the medal. The speech given by Viscount Gort will be heard once more.

The re-enactment will take place at 6 p.m. A delegation from the Royal Society of St George of the UK will be coming for the purpose.
