The Police Commissioner has turned down a request to close a section of the Regional Road for the firing of fireworks during the feast of St Joseph in Msida this weekend.

The decision, reversing a trend of the past 10 years, was taken following an appeal by the Superintendent of Mater Dei Hospital for access roads to the hospital not to be closed.

The superintendent’s appeal had drawn an angry reaction from the president of the Ghaqda Melita Banda San Guzepp, Vince Azzopardi, leading the College of Parish Priests to express concern over any risks which may be caused to the sick and any inconvenience which can be caused to people visiting Mater Dei Hospital should the approach roads be closed.

It is not known if any fireworks will now be let off for the feast, and from where.
