FOI council member and Environment Committee chairman Godwin C. Micallef has been invited to sit on the National Standardisation Committee for the Environment.

The Malta Standards Authority (MSA) is a full member of the European and international standards organisations CEN, CENELEC and ISO. These organisations prepare standards on subjects as diverse as electronics and waste services.

It is evident that the work of these organisations has a direct impact on the environment. For this purpose these organisations are setting up technical committees to ensure that standards take into account the impact their implementation will have on the environment.

The MSA believes that the safeguarding of the environment is of importance to a small island state, such as Malta, and consequently it was felt that a National Standardisation Committee for the Environment should be set up.

A first meeting was held recently under the chairmanship of Ing. M. Cassar from the MSA Standardisation Directorate. The committee will be composed of the main stakeholders in the environment sector.
