The dining hall and common area of the female ward at Mount Carmel Hospital were refurbished following an initiative by a number of volunteers led by Mrs Michelle Muscat, the Prime Minister's wife.

This voluntary initiative is aimed to improve the lives of patients at Mount Carmel through a better environment.

The works carried out included wall painting, plastering, sewing of curtains as replacement of sofas, tables, chairs and other furniture.

Mrs Muscat said that this administration inherited a hospital with substantial parts in complete disrepair and she looked forward to continue to assist volunteers and staff at the hospital.

She emphasised the need for more awareness to eliminate the stigma that society held on mental health and stressed the need for educational initiatives to help society understand more the challenges and struggles faced by mental health patients and how they could play an inclusive role in the community.
