A proposal to name the Mrieħel bypass pedestrian footbridge after the two teenage girls who died while crossing the road in August 2005 is being considered, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi told parliament this evening.

Mr Mizzi told Jason Azzopardi (PN) that the government was thinking of naming the bridge after 17-year-old Emma Housley and her 13-year-old friend Graziella Fenech.

The two were victims of a traffic accident while crossing the Mrieħel bypass in August 2005 on their way to visit a sick friend. Miss Housley died on the spot and Miss Fenech succumbed to injuries two days later.

Mr Mizzi said the footbridge was being manufactured at the contractor’s plant. Upright structures on both sides of the road have already been erected and works are expected to be complete by June.

The bridge is expected to cost €1 million, with the sum being forked out by private entrepreneurs.
