Mqabba stepped up their bid to retain their place in the Premier League next season when they saw off Marsaxlokk 3-0 at the Tedesco Stadium this evening.

Clive Mizzi's side were in control right from the outset and deservedly took the lead after only 20 minutes. Thiago Mazzitelli released Claudio Calleja who turned past Marsaxlokk goalkeeper Christian Cassar before depositing the ball into an empty net.

The southerners had little time to recover before Mqabba struck again two minutes later. Calleja picked Jean Paul Muscat who raced past two opposing defenders before unleashing a firm low shot that rolled into the net.

Stung by this double setback Marsaxlokk struggled to get their way back into the match and on 65 minutes it was Mqabba who came close to a third goal when from a Claudio Calleja corner-kick, Branislav Timotic was first on the ball but his firm header was pushed away by Christian Cassar.

Mqabba wrapped up the points in stoppage time when Marlon Briffa stormed inside the area and was upended by Jonathan Xerri with the referee immediately pointing to the spot. Mamic stepped up for the kick and drilled the ball past Cassar.

Mqabba midfielder David Fenech was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
