Strong winds have ruined a fireworks factory's attempt to set a new Guinness world record for operating the largest pyrotechnic Catherine Wheel.

Despite the necessary structural support, the winds which persisted early yesterday morning caused severe damage to the huge structure, which is believed to have cost thousands.

Fireworks enthusiasts from Mqabba's Our Lady of the Lilies fireworks factory had been trying to break the current record set abroad by a Catherine wheel with a diameter of almost 30 metres.

The organisers said they would have another go at the record in future.
