Malta Public Transport said today this evening it will initiate discussions through the Director of Labour for a verification process to establish which union enjoyed majority representation of its employees.

Earlier today, the Union Haddiema Maghqudin said workers will soon be able to decide whether they wanted the General Workers’ Union or the Union Haddiema Maghqudin to represent them in line with a decree given yesterday by Judge Lawrence Mintoff.

The UHM said it had the support of the majority of drivers and had expected them to have the right to choose their union for months. More workers joined the union in the past days and it now enjoyed majority membership.

It said that although it had requested recognition, the company denied the union’s request for a verification process and the UHM had to resort to legal action.

MPT said the decree was an important milestone in resolving the industrial turmoil that existed between both unions and would allow the company to focus on the changes required to improve the public transport service.
