Nationalist MP Philip Mifsud has written to the chairman of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) urging the authority to quickly process applications for improvements to farms and fields so that the farmers could be eligible for EU assistance.

Mr Mifsud said several applications had been pending for weeks and months.

The Rural Affairs Ministry on November 12 issued a call for applications for farmers to receive EU assistance which could amount to €75,000 in each case. Applications, including the development permit, have to be submitted by early January.

Mr Mifsud said several farmers had expressed fears that they could lose this golden opportunity for assistance because they did not have the permits in hand.
