Labour MP Evarist Bartolo has requested Speaker Michael Frendo to investigate allegations about him made by two Nationalist MPs.

In a letter to Dr Frendo, Mr Bartolo said that in the past week Minister Austin Gatt and MP David Agius had accused him of submitting questions and following a number of public contracts because of his interests in the private company Computer Domain.

Mr Bartolo said he had always filled his declaration of assets honestly, declaring his interests and where his income was coming from.

What the two MPs were saying, he said, amounted to a grievous accusation that he had made a false declaration of assets.

He said he would answer all questions Dr Frendo might ask him and gave Dr Frendo access to his bank account, his information at the Income Tax Department and any other information the Speaker might deem necessary for his investigation.

Mr Bartolo said that the same charges were made against him in a series of anonymous letters he passed to the police early this year and which had not been seriously investigated.

These accusations started being made after he followed closely, spoke or questioned public contracts, including those of the power station extension in Delimara and contracts in the IT sector.

He said that whenever he spoke about the award of a public contract he had always done so to ensure that the process was clean and fair and not to favour anyone.

He would continue to do this and would not be stopped by lies from carrying out his duty as an MP, an essential part of which was to scrutinise government work and the expenditure of the people’s money, Mr Bartolo said.
