Cinema lovers are in for a real treat on July 2 - National Cinema Day - with a choice of 20 different films on 39 big screens, each for the price of Lm1.30.

This is the 10th consecutive year that this film extravaganza is being organised by KRS Distributors Ltd and it continues to go from strength to strength.

KRS general manager Charles Pace said 24,000 people watched a movie on the day last year, just below the 25,000 who had flocked to the cinemas on National Cinema Day in 2002.

"Ten years on, this event has become an annual tradition and we get people calling us months in advance to check the date," Mr Pace said.

KRS assistant general manager Alex Pace said this year's selection of films should provide ample entertainment for all the family as well as young people - the list includes animated features, action thrillers and comedies.

Film addicts could literally spend all the day and night at the cinema hopping from one screen to the next.

Among the films on offer is Monster-In-Law, directed by Legally Blonde's Robert Luketic and starring Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, who returns to the big screen after a 14-year absence.

Another film which should go down well with the crowds is Kingdom of Heaven, a historical adventure from the director of Gladiator, Ridley Scott, starring top Hollywood stars Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons and Liam Neeson.

Mr and Mrs Smith, a comedy adventure film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie - blamed for breaking up Pitt's marriage with Jennifer Aniston - should also prove popular.

For those who are into political thrillers, don't miss out on The Interpreter, which stars Oscar-winning actors Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn, under the direction of Sidney Pollack.

Another film starring Sean Penn is The Assassination of Richard Nixon. Fans of the comic book superhero Batman should watch out for Batman Begins, the film which takes a rather serious look at the origins of many a child's (and grown-up's) hero.

For the younger generation there is Valiant, a high-flying, computer animated comedy-adventure of a brave but undersized pigeon named Valiant, from the producers of Shrek and Shrek 2.

Also running on the day are two thrillers - House of Wax, the remake of the 1953 Horror Thriller, and The Jacket.

Other films include The Wedding Date, Sin City, The Pacifier and Guess Who.

National Cinema Day will be celebrated at Eden Century Cinemas in St George's Bay and Galleria in Fgura; Empire Cinemas, Bugibba; Embassy Cinema World, Valletta; The New Sun City Ciné Palais, Marsascala, and the Citadel in Gozo.

Booking opens on Monday. Early booking is recommended.
