A Somali man has been remanded in custody by a court after pleading not guilty to causing about €2,000 in damages to a parked car near the Marsa open centre.

Abdiqani Mahad Mohamed, 21, was charged with willfully damaging a Chevrolet Aveo and relapsing.

The court heard the that the incident happened yesterday afternoon at about 3pm, when the car owner allegedly spotted the defendant kicking his car for no particular reason.

Asked by Magistrate Gabriella Vella whether he was pleading guilty or not, the accused told his interpreter that he had only touched the vehicle, and so denied all charges.

No request for bail was made by lawyer Benjamin Valenzia, who was legal aid to the defendant. Police inspector Daryl Borg prosecuted
