McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton said that he missed winning and intended to clamber back on top of the podium in Turkey this weekend.

“This weekend obviously I want to get points, but I want to win. I miss winning, so that’s my plan,” the 23-year-old told reporters at the Istanbul Park circuit.

“I’ve tasted it (victory) quite a few times now, and that’s what we’re here to do. We’re here to win,” added the Briton, who will be starting only his 22nd grand prix but already has five victories under his belt.

Hamilton won four times last year in a sensational rookie season that saw the Briton narrowly miss out on the title.

He started this year in similarly impressive form, winning the Australian season-opener, but then suffered a slump in form before returning to the podium with third place in the Spanish Grand Prix on April 27.

Ferrari, with world champion Kimi Raikkonen top of the standings and nine points clear of Hamilton, have now won the last three races and are favourites to triumph again in Istanbul.

Brazilian Felipe Massa, Raikkonen’s team mate, has won the last two Turkish Grands Prix from pole position.

Hamilton made it clear he would be taking nothing for granted, saying: “I never approach a race ever thinking I’m the favourite. It doesn’t really make any difference.

“Felipe has won the last two races here, but we’re here to put an end to that.”

“I’ve got so much belief. I really truly believe in my team and my abilities, and I’ve no doubts we can do it,” added the Briton.

“Although it’s easier said than done, I think this weekend we can have a good shot.”

Hamilton said he had been encouraged by his performance in Barcelona, with the car getting steadily faster over the course of the weekend.

“The great thing was that we were able to push them (Ferrari) at the end of the race,” he said.

“I wouldn’t say it was a relief, but it was a boost of confidence for the whole team, including myself, knowing that we do still have a very strong package and it is close.

“We’ve just got to work even harder now to make sure we gain an extra tenth here and there, but I have no doubts that we can do that.”
