A stormy mother and son relationship spiraled out of control on Friday afternoon, landing the man in court after he allegedly smashed her front door.

The 44-year old man was released from preventive arrest on Saturday after denying his alleged wrongdoing.

The man, whose constant discord with his mother had been the cause of several incidents, was marched to court under arrest after the umpteenth incident at the family’s Msida home necessitated police intervention.

Upon his arraignment, the man, whose name was banned from publication under court order, pleaded not guilty to the use of violence, including moral or psychological, threatening and assaulting his mother, causing her to fear violence.

The son was further charged with damaging his mother’s property as well as possessing cannabis.

The court, presided over by magistrate Monica Vella, was told that matters between the mother and her son had escalated on Friday to the point that the man, who shared his mother’s roof, allegedly smashed her front door.

After hearing submissions by both parties, the court upheld the accused’s request for bail under strict orders to move out of his mother’s home and to undergo rehabilitation for his drug and anger management problems.

Bail was also granted against a personal guarantee of €5,000 and a warning not to approach his mother or her home.

Inspector Bernardette Valletta prosecuted.
Lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri were defence counsel.
