A four-year old boy’s mother, who has only been out of prison for a few months, was yesterday remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to a series of petty thefts.

The 40-year-old woman from Qawra (her name is not appearing to protect the child) spent 26 months in prison on a similar charge and had been free for four months when she allegedly began stealing again in Valletta on January 4.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera appointed a social worker to look after the child before remanding the accused in custody.

The father is abroad.

Police Inspector James Grech prosecuted.

Lawyer Veronique Dalli was defence counsel.
