Transport Malta insisted today that contrary to claims by Moviment Graffitti, trees removed from roads in Marsa have not been destroyed but have been replanted elsewhere.

"News of the death of the trees that lined the roads has been greatly exaggerated. Most have been moved to live out their days in other places around Malta. Transport Malta reiterates that it is guided by and has adhered to the directives of the various authorities on the subject who advised us which trees to replant and which to destroy. These instructions were followed to the letter. The transplanted ones were mainly Ficus Litida from Council of Europe Road. Oleander Shrubs from other locations are also included in this exercise," TM said.

These trees have been taken mostly to Hal Far (in two different areas), Ta' Qali (Parks), and Hal Kirkop (close to a concrete plant).

The Authority pointed out that certain trees (particularly their roots) damage the road infrastructure as well as pose a danger to motorists.

"The new road designs advocate a more reasonable balance in terms of landscaping and there will therefore be more appropriate landscaping in the new roads," it said.

Moviment Graffitti on Sunday placed cardboard tombstones near trees which are being removed.
