A Moroccan woman was this afternoon jailed for three months and placed under a two-year supervision order after pleading guilty to breaking into her friend's Sliema apartment while he was at work and committing a crime while on bail.

Meriam Abdussalam Mouaddea, 39, who resides in San Gwann, pleaded guilty to the theft of a bag with some €200 in coins and to damaging the flat's front door in St Ignatius Junction on November 29.

The court heard how Ms Mouaddea was held inside the flat when she was caught red handed as she ransacked the place.

The flat is rented to Adam Ali Anwar and Abdu Rahman who told police that at around 6.30am, there was a knock at the door where he found the woman who asked him for a glass of water. While she was inside, she asked after his flatmate, a certain Mohammed, who was in America.

Mr Anwar asked her to leave as he had to go to work. She asked them when they will be back and he told her they will will return in the evening.

Mr Rahman called Mr Anwar at around 10am to tell him that he was going to check on the flat as he was suspicious and when he got there, he found the front door open. Inside he found the woman who started pleading with him not to call the police and how she would call a relative in Italy for help.

He called the police who found the Moroccan woman sobbing on the bed in a flat that had been rummaged through. Inside her handbag, they found a bag with coins.

Before Magistrate Francesco Depasquale, the woman pleaded guilty to the charges brought against her. He jailed her for three months for breaching her bail conditions over another case and placed her on a two-year supervision order.

Police Inspector Jason Sultana prosecuted while lawyer Joe Brincat appeared for the woman.
