More than €16 million in benefit fraud was detected in the past five years, information given in parliament today shows.

Social Policy Minister Michael Farrugia, replying to a question by Clyde Puli (PN), said that 677 people were found committing benefit fraud in 2010, when the fraud totalled  €3,716,295.

In 2011, 742 people were caught and the fraud reached  €3,661,150.

In 2012, 548 were caught and the fraud reached €2,827,459. 

565 were caught in 2013 when the fraud amounted to €3,391,478 while this year, up to October, 473 were caught with the fraud reaching €3,057,312.
