More than 12,000 have been treated at Mater Dei Hospital's children's emergency since December, Health Minister Chris Fearne said this morning.

"Children's illnesses and treatments are different to adults and this is why we needed an emergency section dealing specifically with them," he said.

Doctors, nurses and other staff members are specifically trained to work in the sector, while the ambiance is different to the traditional hospital. Every treatment room has a particular theme while the emergency area also has a play area.
