I refer to Jean-Claude Cardona’s letter Pay As You Zap Between Channels (September 2). It is pertinent to point out that through the recent investment in its cable television infrastructure, Melita is now offering more sports content to its subscribers at no additional costs.

Melita has achieved what no other local competitor managed, offering a tariff structure where sports lovers can themselves decide how much they would like to spend on their television services by simply choosing the package of their choice. What was previously structured as premium content has now been made available at no additional cost within the basic tier TV packages (L and XL) while the rest of the premium content is now available at a cheaper price per month. This is the opposite of what our competitors offer, where subscribers wanting access to premium content are forced to subscribe to the higher tiers of basic TV subscription.

With the introduction of the new sports packages, Melita L and XL, subscribers are now enjoying access to more local and international sports content for free – up to five new sports channels in standard definition and a high definition channel.

Melita is aware that local and international sports events have a very strong following among its customers and therefore, sports enjoys the importance it merits in Melita’s programming mix to make these events as accessible as possible to all Melita subscribers.

Melita fully agrees that the current situation imposing on sports fans to pay two operators every month in order to get access to European football is frustrating and disappointing for the football enthusiasts of Malta.

As stated repeatedly over the past months, Melita stands firm by its position that it is willing to make its premium sports and movie channels including Uefa Champions League, Uefa Europa League and Copa Libertatores available to GO customers under the right conditions via a wholesale agreement for channel sharing.

We support the actions taken by the parliamentary committee on social affairs which is in fact still looking into the matter and has recently issued letters to several bodies involved in this discussion to pursue all possible routes that can lead to a fair solution. Malta is paying more than it can afford and cooperation between operators is the way forward.
