Heritage NGO Din l-Art Ħelwa has added its voice to objections to a new petrol station proposed for a site outside the development zone near Mgarr (Malta).

The Planning Authority is due to take a decision on the development application tomorrow.

'Oversized service and petrol stations have no place in our country side', Simone Mizzi, Din l-Art Helwa's executive president said in a statement.

"They are totally out of proportion with the rural highways and populations they are intended to serve."

She said the proposed development would take up an inordinate amount of good land.

"It is yet another mini commercial centre in the making as can be seen with the recent spate of similar developments outside Attard, below Mdina, and at the hilltop in Mellieha, all built on the back of the necessary regulations that determine petrol stations need to be outside residential areas due to health and hazard considerations. Relocation is justifiable, the size and scope, however, are not."
