Ten people from Somalia and Eritrea - a couple, a child and seven men, left Malta today to start a new life in the United States.

The immigrants were sent to the US under the US Refugee Resettlement Program (USRRP).  On arrival, they will be assisted by non-governmental organisation to proceed to their final destinations in various states.

This latest departure brings the total of beneficiaries of international protection who were resettled to the United States from Malta since 2007 to 1,044.

Since the start of the USRRP in 2008, 1,016 protection beneficiaries have been resettled in the US.

233 migrants from Malta have been resettled from Malta in the US this year. More are expected to leave to be resettled in the coming weeks.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees office in Malta, the International Organisation for Migration and US government officials are involved at various stages of this resettlement process.

In all 1,702 refugees and beneficiaries of international protection have been relocated or resettled to various other countries since 2005 – 312 this year.
