The number of Maltese going abroad in August amounted to 37,337, an increase of 4.2 percent over the same month last year, the NSO said today. Almost 90 percent travelled by air.
Between January and August, the number of travelling Maltese amounted to 198,828, an increase of 5.7 per cent over the corresponding period last year.
Of these, 85.6 percent travelled to EU destinations; the most visited countries were Italy and the UK.
The largest proportion of outbound passengers - 45.0 per cent – were between 25 and 44 years old, followed by those in the 45 to 64 age bracket who accounted for 37.8 per cent of total Maltese travellers.
