Maltese departing by air and sea in February were estimated at 16,840, most in the 25-44 age bracket, the National Statistics Office said.

It said that 14,446 visited an EU destination, the most popular being Italy and the UK, while 2,394 ventured outside the EU.

In the first two months of this year, the number of Maltese passengers departing by air and sea amounted to 36,595, an increase of 3.3 per cent over the corresponding period last year.

Of these, 85.3 per cent travelled to EU destinations, with the most visited countries being the UK and Italy.

Male outbound passengers exceeded females, the former accounting for 61.7 per cent of the total. More than half the passengers were aged 25-44. 37.7 per cent were in the 45-64 age bracket.
