A series of trials were held recently at the Justin Haber Academy (JHA) during an open day for young players at the Floriana ground.
Sessions were conducted by the academy coaches, led by Michael Farrugia and Sunderland AFC’s academy coach Steve McClarence.
Young Alex Spiteri left the best impression and won a season’s scholarship with JHA.
JHA is affiliated with Sunderland AFC and implements a training programme approved by the English club’s Academy of Light.
Through this affiliation JHA players have the opportunity to train in Sunderland. In November, it will be the turn of Brooklyn Borg, Matias Ellul and James Vella to practise at the Academy of Light in England.
This will be Borg’s second stint with Sunderland as Leo Agius has just returned from his ninth visit to the Academy of Light.
Agius was involved in a few Academy games with the Black Cats and was among the scorers in a match against Manchester City.
