The volume and wholesale value of fish landings in the second quarter this year increased by 5.1 and 22.7 per cent respectively, the National Statistics Office said.

The NSO said that during this period, fish caught amounted to 423,777 kilogrammes, an increase of 5.1 per cent over the comparative period last year.

Blue fin tuna, the main species caught in the period, advanced by 51 per cent, while mackerel and swordfish dropped by 26.3 per cent and 42.6 per cent respectively.

The wholesale value of fish landings went up to €2.65 million.

The NSO said that while fish landings by Maltese fishermen decreased by 1.1 per cent over the same period last year, landings by Gozitan fishermen rose by 16.7 per cent.
