Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya escaped serious injury when he lost control of his car in the Daytona race and slammed into the back of a safety truck carrying jet fuel last night. The crash caused a fiery explosion that delayed the race another two hours.
Montoya was able to get out of his car and walk away from the wreck on his own. Mounted on the back of the truck was a jet dryer with 757 litres (200 gallons) of kerosene used to help dry the track's surface.
The incident happened while the race was under yellow flags and is believed to have been caused by a failure in Montoya's car.
Montoya is no stranger to unusual crashes. In 2004 he crashed into Michael Schumacher during the Monaco grand prix when the race was also under yellow flags.
