A project to monitor air, water and soil quality, noise and radiation will cover the whole territory of the Maltese islands and the surrounding sea up to one nautical mile from the coast, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi told Anton Refalo (PL) in reply to a parliamentary question.

Funds for the project, which would help towards the development of a national monitoring strategy, had been approved in January this year. Tenders for the primary studies, the monitoring strategy and the acquisition of equipment had been in the contractual phase in October 2010.
