Valletta FC darling Sebastian Monesterolo will return to Maltese football next month after an agreement was reached for the Argentine striker to rejoin the Citizens for the rest of the season.

Monesterolo, 25, helped the Citizens win the 2007-08 championship but in June he decided to pursue his career in Cyprus with AEK Larnaca. However, Monesterolo failed to settle in his new surroundings and the same happened with Jerusalem club Hapoel Bnei Lod before deciding to return home to South America.

Valletta coach Paul Zammit yesterday told The Times that Monesterolo will be signed as the club's second foreign player when the mid-season transfer window re-opens in January.

Cameroon striker Priso Doding is the other overseas player at Valletta.

Monesterolo's signing has ended Valletta's interest in fellow Argentine Sebastian Aset who was on a trial this month along with Brazilian Paulo Massaro. This week, the Citizens are expected to take a decision on Massaro, a 27-year-old forward.

For Monesterolo this will be his third stint at Valletta. He first joined the club in January 2006 and scored 11 goals. In 2006/07 he netted 16 times before deciding to leave and join a club in Kuwait.

After an indifferent spell in the Middle East, Monesterolo rejoined Valletta in summer of 2007 and went on to finish the league's top scorer with 19 goals as Valletta, with Victor Sciriha as president, went on to win their first title in seven years.

Monesterolo is expected to join the Citizens before the New Year, in time to join the Valletta squad for the triangular tournament in Ancona on January 4. Valletta will play against Ancona, currently in Serie B, and an Albanian team.

Meanwhile, Valletta's request to have their Premier League match against Hibs postponed was accepted and now they play the Paolites on Wednesday, January 7.
