Conrad Thake's article on the St George's Square project merits consideration by the authorities.

I endorse Dr Thake's views that the design is disappointing and does not fit the square at the heart of our capital.

When one encounters a square in any city, the main attraction that comes in sight is most probably a monument of some important personage or some historical achievement. In the proposed project the prominence is given to the two "spindle looking tree-like solar lights".

Light should always be unobtrusive. Prominence to the Sette Giugno monument at one end together with a monument celebrating either the award of the George Cross or another historical achievement is preferable. These would create a static balance in the spacious square.

Regarding the stone benches, if my memory serves me right, these were still in place during my youth and were removed during the late 1940s or early 1950s.

Having people loitering around the governor's palace did not give a nice picture to the ambience.

It may also be proposed that as embellishment, an electronic board be erected showing details of the current season's cultural activities.
