The Royal Academy’s latest exhibition, entitled Modern British Sculpture, opens next Saturday.

The show is organised by the Royal Academy of Arts, with the support from American Express and the Henry Moore Foundation.

The exhibition will feature important British pieces by sculptors such as Alfred Gilbert, Jacob Epstein, Barbara Hepworth, Richard Long, Julian Opie, Damien Hirst, Leon Underwood, Henry Moore, Anthony Caro and others.

The installation includes works by three former presidents: Frederic Leighton, Charles Wheeler and Phillip King.

The display will also feature pieces from Native American, Indian, and African traditions loaned by the V&A and the British Museum.

These items will be exhibited side-by-side with British sculpture dating from the period 1910-1930 as curators explore the relationship between British and international sculpture.

The venture is curated by Penelope Curtis, director of Tate Britain, and sculptor Keith Wilson, in conjunction with Adrian Locke, Exhibitions Curator, Royal Academy of Arts. The exhibition demonstrates how the Royal Academy has influenced the development of British sculpture during the last 100 years.

Visitors are invited to think about British sculpture in relation to the wider world, and to look at how sculpture has changed to reflect new technologies, and new materials. For example, Alfred Gilbert’s bronze Jubilee Memorial to Queen Victoria created in 1887, and Phillip King’s painted plastic representation of Genghis Khan, produced in 1963, are shown together. Visitors are invited to make their own comparisons between the work of the two artists, the materials at their disposal, and the different period each worked in.

The work of Barabara Hepworth and Henry Moore, a fellow student at Leeds School of Art in the 1920s, are also shown side-by-side. The pieces highlight the development of British sculpture as a world-leader in the post-war years.

Modern British Sculpture will be on view until April 7.
