Mobile users are seeing red after their bills soared and data allowances got rapidly depleted since switching to 4G data plans.

However, Vodafone, the only operator offering 4G coverage in Malta, says there are no higher data charges associated with it. The faster speeds mean that more data is used within the same amount of time when compared to 3G, according to a spokeswoman.

Writing on social media, one mobile user claimed that over two months he was charged an additional €1,130 above his usual plan of €60 monthly, saying the only difference is his use of 4G.

Another individual who spoke to Times of Malta said that his data allowance, which typically lasted him comfortably through the month, was depleted within three days of making the switch, despite his internet usage remaining constant.

Others said they had experienced data bills of 50 per cent and more above their usual tariffs, also without changes to their online habits.

The term 4G refers to the fourth-generation of wireless mobile technology, offering significantly faster mobile internet when compared to the previous 3G system.

Vodafone’s spokeswoman said the company had taken steps to protect its customers from “bill shock” with a lower data rate that kicked in once users exceeded their bundle allowance, as well as text notifications at 500mb intervals.

“Our website has a dedicated section on 4G, which has all the relevant information a customer may need when considering whether to switch to 4G, including what the most common types of internet activity consume in terms of data,” she added.

“Staff at all retail outlets and at our call centre are also trained in providing the neces-sary information.”

The company said its network now covered 70 per cent of the Maltese population, and that 80 per cent of handsets purchased from Vodafone were 4G capable, indicating a rising demand for the service.
