A joint meeting of the MLP parliamentary group and the executive decided last night that the party general conference will meet on June 5 to elect a new leader to succeed Alfred Sant.

Earlier dates were discarded to allow time for the party to ponder events. The decision was taken after a six-hour meeting which ended after midnight.

The meeting was meant to discss the election loss, decide which seats will be ceded by candidates elected from two districts and come up with a day for the general conference to meet.

The MLP in a statement this morning said the executive and the parliamentary group expressed their appreciation to Alfred Sant for his 16 years of leadership, based on honesty, integrity and truth.

They unanimously confirmed Charles Mangion as Acting leader until the election of the new leader.

An election for deputy leaders will be held on June 12.

Agreement was also reached on the drawing up of an internal reort on the general election, by a group of identified persons who the party did not name.
