The decision by Air Mala to stop flights to Glasgow in Scotland from November would affect operators' efforts to push Malta as an all year destination, the Labour Party's spokesman on tourism, Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, said yesterday.

"Reducing flights to any destination does not augur well for the tourism industry," she said.

The service to Glasgow is being stopped because of the higher cost of fuel and Ms Coleiro Preca asked whether the government planned to halt flights to other destinations if they were not viable.

Air Malta was part of the economic infrastructure and the government, while paying attention to viability, should ensure the airline shoulders responsibilities that went beyond this factor, she said.
