The Labour Party has called for a national action plan to address a "worrying trend" in the health and lifestyle of young people, which emerges from recent studies.

Judging by the alarming prevalence of smoking and overweight people, it appears that Maltese youths are at risk, Owen Bonnici, Labour spokesman for youth and culture, said.

Dr Bonnici said there was an increasing tendency among 15-year-olds to smoke. Additionally, EU studies indicate that many are overweight and rank poorly for physical exercise when compared to European youths.

The MP pointed out that less than an hour a week is dedicated to physical education in many local schools. Education is key to prevention, as this would lead to awareness and create an incentive for participation in sports.

In this sense, the party believes that youth involvement in sports and other physical activities should be encouraged through the education system, even rewarding those who excel, Dr Bonnici said.
