The Labour Party has urged the government to take decision on alternative sources of energy in order to reduce Malta’s dependence on oil.

The party spokesman on the environment, sustainable development and climate change, Leo Brincat, recalled that the PN had promised a windfarm some 20 miles off Malta which would generate the equivalent of a fifth of the current output of the power stations.

While acknowledging the problems and costs which such a project would involve, Mr Brincat said Malta was currently suffering the consequences of inaction on alternative source of energy over the past 20 years.

He said the MLP had an open mind on the subject and would welcome any proposals and looked forward to broad consultation and debate on the issue.
