MITA, the government's IT agency, is in the process of setting up a new €8 million data centre for use by the government.
The new facility will be housed in Sta Venera and will gradually replace the the two data centres at Blata l-Bajda, which are getting full, IT Minister Austin Gatt said in reply to a parliamentary question.
Dr Gatt said that MITA has been granted government property at Sta Venera which is being structurally altered before new offices and the equipment are installed and the networks transferred.
The new data centre will be tailored to the government's latest ICT needs, while ensuring that the facility is more robust and energy efficient.
Work is expected to be completed by the end of this year but the data centres at Gattard House will remain in use until the gradual transfer of operations is completed.
The data centre at Mater Dei Hospital will remain in operation as at present.
