MEP Miriam Dalli has called for a more energised diplomatic effort by the European Union to help broker a national Unity Government in Libya.

Speaking on the Euronews programme ‘The Network’, Dr Dalli said that the EU had so far taken a back seat and some member states where in complete denial about what was going on in Libya.

Speaking against any unilateral military operations, Dr Dalli said all actions in Libya should be mandated by the United Nations.

“We need to have the UN and the Arab partners take the lead. The Arab partners are crucial players in finding a solution. If we want to find a solution which is successful it has to be a solution coming from the Libyan people to the Libyan people,” she said.

During this edition of the programme, journalist Chris Burns focused on the current instability in Libya together with panellists Farida El-AllagiChargée d’Affairs of the Libyan Mission to the EU; Marc Pierini, visiting scholar at the think tank Carnegie Europe, and a former EU ambassador to Libya and Dr Dalli.

Dr Dalli said that the primary effort should be to preserve the Libyan state: “we need to have stability in Libya if we want to have stability in the Mediterranean and stability in Europe,” she insisted.
