A health warning has been issued against consuming Miracle Mineral Solution, a mineral supplement found to contain industrial-strength bleach.

The Health Department said the supplement contained a 28 per cent sodium chloride solution, which when consumed as instructed could cause severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, potentially leading to dehydration and reduced blood pressure.

The product, retailed as an oral mineral supplement, is on sale in Europe and on the internet.

If the solution is diluted less than instructed, it could cause damage to intestines and blood cells, potentially resulting in kidney failure.

The department advised against buying the supplement or MMS2, which comes in the form of capsules. Those in possession of the product are being asked to throw it away and those who consumed it and are feeling unwell should consult their doctor.

The department said, although there was one report of death associated with the use of the product abroad, the cause of the fatality had not been officially confirmed.
